What is Because I Am A Girl?
Many of us have heard of it and seen ads for Because I Am A Girl (BIAAG). Yet, a lot of us don’t exactly know what it does. You may know that it’s a group trying to make the world a better place. But how?
The first thing you need to know is that Because I Am A Girl is an initiative of Plan Canada, a not-for-profit, independent development agency that helps people in more than 65 countries. Plan’s mission is to end global poverty.
Investing in girls is key to eliminating poverty and creating a brighter, safer future for everyone. When girls are educated, healthy and informed, they pull themselves, their children and their communities out of poverty.– Because I Am A Girl
In many countries, people struggle to pay for food, shelter and clothing-the things we all need to survive. According to Plan Canada, roughly 1.4 billion people live on $1.25 or less a day. That can’t even cover the cost of a fro-yo! You know what’s even crazier about that statistic? Seventy percent of those people are female. This means that girls have fewer chances than boys to be healthy, safe and follow their dreams. BIAAG wants to make the world a better place for girls.
If you want to learn more about girl’s rights, Because I Am A Girl has a quiz that tests what you know about the issues girls and women in the developing world face. Some of the answers are shocking. Girls are three times as likely to be malnourished as their brothers! In the developing world, a family with little food will feed the men and boys first!
Almost 25 percent of girls living in developing countries don’t go to school. But for every year a girls spends in school, her lifetime income goes up 10-20 percent.
Because I Am A Girl believes that the best to end poverty and improve the lives of everyone in the developing world is to help girls: feed them, keep them safe and give them an education. They know that when safe, educated, healthy girls and women will help the people around them.
Here’s another happier statistic: when a country starts educating its girls, the country actually gets wealthier.

BIAAG has a brilliant plan for making the world a better place for women and girls — they’ve asked girls everywhere to help. Getting girls involved in helping other girls is what makes BIAAG so unique and promising. Girls everywhere are raising money to help BIIAG help girls in need.
