Haunted Houses: Part 1

We hear a lot about Haunted Houses around Hallowe’en, but the ones you visit are all man-made with people in costumes and chicken exits. But there are real haunted houses. Here are 3 of them, and their stories.

  1. 1.     Amityville, Long Island

Ever heard of the Amityville Horror? It’s a true story about the Lutz family who moved into an old house in Amityville, Long Island in December of 1985. About a year before the Lutz’s moved in, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. had shot and killed six members of his family in the house. The Lutz’s only lasted 28 days in the house before they were forced out by the spirits and ghosts that remained. Freaky.

  1. 2.     The Winchester Mansion

Sarah Winchester was the widow of a gun maker. In 1884, Sarah held a séance with a medium in which she was told that she must build a house and never stop the construction, otherwise the spirits killed by her husband’s guns would come after her, just like they went after her husband.

So Sarah moved to California and began construction of the Winchester Mansion, adding in twists, turns, and dead ends so that the spirits would get lost and never be able to find her. She followed the medium’s instructions and construction on the house was never stopped until the day of Sarah’s death in 1922. Now, it is said that Sarah’s spirit, as well as all of the spirits that got lost in her big, confusing mansion, forever roam the halls in search of the exit.

  1. 3.     The Crescent Hotel

Unexplained things have been seen, off noises have been heard, strange occurences have happened. The Crescent Hotel, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is believed to be America’s most haunted hotel.

Since it’s construction in 1885, countless people have checked into the hotel but never checked out, doomed to forever roam its haunted hallways. These spirits include Michael, the Irish stonemason who fell to his death while building the hotel in 1885; Theodora, the cancer patient who seems to need help find her room key; and Morris the cat, a mysterious pet who appears in the luxury suites at the foot of your bed. These are just a few of the many, many spirits that are trapped inside the Crescent Hotel.
